The City and Regional Planning Department uses a wide array of technology as part of its learning curriculum, part of its charge to "learn by doing." As such, students are encouraged to have a personal computer. CRP does have a dedicated student computer lab within the department, and thus does not require students to own their own system. CRP is a Windows-based department and recommends Windows systems to its students.
The choice between a desktop or labtop system is left up to the user, however the majority of CRP facilities now offer wireless internet access for laptops via the 802.11b standard. Students considering housing at Cal Poly's on-campus accomodations should consult ResNet.
For those student who wish to have their own computer, the following is a recommended system configuration for those considering the purchase of a new computer. Cal Poly has made arrangements with Dell for deals on purchases for registered students. A special Cal Poly webiste has been established to guide users to these services - the Student Computing Initiative. The systems recommended are not necessary for undergraduate students until they start the 200-series design labs.
