Application Policy & Process for the BSCRP Program

Each quarter the City and Regional Planning (CRP) Department reviews applications of current Cal Poly students petitioning to change their major to CRP. Interested students must consult with a CRP Department advisor before applying; then complete the university requirements (see attached sheet). Materials should be submitted to the College of Architecture & Environmental Design Advising Center (Bldg. 5, Room 221) by the end of the fifth week of the quarter. A decision will be made by the CRP department head at the end of the term. If applicant is approved for transfer into CRP, the transfer will take effect the following term.

Applicants should be aware that not all change of major petitions will be approved. Those not approved will be notified. Students on academic probation will not be considered for change of major.

The department uses the following criteria for reviewing applicants:

  1. Completion of CRP 212 (grade earned)
  2. Completion of and grades earned in other courses applicable to the BSCRP degree (support courses as well as major courses listed in the appropriate catalog);
  3. Writing skills, as demonstrated by a two-page essay regarding the applicant’s interest in and commitment to the field of planning.
  4. Other materials such as portfolios, projects and awards that demonstrate skill, capacity, leadership or accomplishment.
  5. Overall Grade Point Average
